The National Shooting Sports Foundation has partnered with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to launch a new initiative to help gun sellers make security-related decisions to deter and prevent thefts.
Details of Operation Secure Store will be revealed in coming weeks, but in a statement Wednesday the firearms industry association said the new program will build on prior partnerships with ATF to help prevent thefts through educational programming, such as an ongoing series of regional seminars hosted by the agency.
"No one wants to prevent the theft of firearms more than the licensed retailers that sell them," NSSF CEO Stephen Sanetti said. "There is no one-size fits all solution to helping prevent thefts from firearms retailers, which is why Operation Safe Store will provide access to information and training to allow retailers to make the decisions that are right for them."
More than 9,200 firearms were reported stolen from licensed gun sellers in 2016, according to ATF.
However, thefts from stores account for only a small percentage of stolen firearms. The U.S. Department of Justice estimated an average of 232,400 guns where stolen from gun owners every year from 2005 to 2010. http://prn.to/2DCFF0A
